I have margarita opinions, and apparently, so does half of Fairfax. We drove the beltway loop from the dependable classic at Señor Tequila’s to the blueberry revelation at Don Luis, dodging a watery mango disaster in between.

One sip of that sad Urbano drink confirmed my suspicion. The good news?

This town quietly takes its tequila seriously. The list below is the result of my research, and my slightly fuzzy memory.

Go find your new usual.

Señor Tequila's margarita is a classic. It's not fancy. But it is exactly right. The balance of lime and tequila is spot on. I watched them mix it tableside. A little performance, a lot of flavor. The glass came properly salted, not overdone. My meal was huge. I left stuffed and happy. The staff checked on us often. The room felt clean and bright. If you want a dependable, strong margarita without gimmicks, this is your place. I’d go back tomorrow. Simple as that.

La Campesina surprised me. The margarita was traditional, maybe a touch sweet, but solid. Then the salmon arrived. That was the star. Cooked perfectly, flaky, with a sauce that made me slow down. The burrito my friend ordered was enormous. Packed with flavor, not just filler. The spices were bold but not harsh. Service was attentive without hovering. It’s a relaxed spot. The happy hour runs long, which is a win. I’ll be back for that salmon. And another margarita.

Two Burritos does one thing well. Big portions. My margarita was frozen and mango-flavored. Sweet, icy, dangerous. It went down too easy. The burrito was massive. I took half home. The staff was helpful, especially with my takeout box. The sauce selection is impressive. Green, red, spicy, mild. I tried them all. The quesadilla my friend ordered was loaded with veggies. Fresh and hot. It’s not a fancy place. But it’s honest. And it’s fast. If you’re hungry and want value, go here. Just pace yourself on that frozen drink.

Los Toltecas is a Fairfax fixture. I’ve been coming here for years. The margarita is reliable. Not the best in town, but never bad. The food comes out fast, always hot. The chips and salsa arrive before you even order. The staff is quick and courteous. It’s a solid choice for a weeknight dinner. The atmosphere is familiar, almost comforting. You know what you’re getting. And that’s fine by me. My last visit, the enchiladas were perfect. The service was sharp. It’s a dependable staple. I respect that.

The wait was short, even on a Saturday. The staff was welcoming from the moment I walked in. The outdoor seating is a bonus in good weather. Prices are fair for the portion sizes. I left satisfied. It’s a neighborhood spot that does things right. I’ll definitely return. Maybe next time I’ll try the house special.

Skip the watery mango margarita
Cold food, lukewarm service
Salsa tastes like tomato juice
Loud music overwhelms dinner
Not worth a return visit

Urbano Tex-Mex missed the mark. My margarita tasted watered down. The mango version was syrupy, not fresh. The food came out cold. My tacos were lukewarm. The service was slow and indifferent. The salsa tasted like canned tomato juice. It was too loud to even have a conversation. I wanted to like it. The menu looked promising. But the execution fell flat. For the price, I expected more. I won’t be rushing back. There are too many other good options nearby. I’m genuinely disappointed.

One Bar & Grill surprised me. I came for the happy hour, which runs all day. That’s a win. The margarita was solid, not too sweet. The bourbon selection is impressive. My friend had a flight. The tapas were small but beautifully plated. The staff was attentive and friendly. The bill was reasonable, especially for the quality. It’s a nice spot for after-work drinks. The atmosphere is relaxed but polished. I’d come back for the bourbon alone. But the margarita holds its own. Good find.

Mackenzie's Tunes & Tonics is unique. The live music adds a nice layer. My margarita was fresh, made with real lime juice. The kitchen is careful with allergies. My server was warm and patient. The music was acoustic, not overpowering. It felt personal. Like they care about each detail. I left with a smile. I’ll definitely return.

Creamy, seasoned well. The churros with ice cream were a perfect ending. The service was kind and attentive. It feels like a family operation. Authentic New Mexico style. That green chile is no joke. It’s my go-to when I don’t want to think. I just walk in, nod, and my usual appears. That’s a rare thing. This place earns its name. It leaves a lasting impression.

Highlights
Dog-friendly patio perfection
Crispy chili bacon standout
Allergen menu on request
Jaden and Colin shine
Ribeye burger cooked flawlessly

Lazy Dog is a different kind of margarita. They make it with a twist. Not your standard recipe. But it works. The dog-friendly patio is a big draw. I brought my pup; they brought water. The chili bacon appetizer was crispy, smoky, a little spicy. My ribeye burger was cooked exactly as asked. The margarita had a nice kick. The staff was friendly. They even have an allergen menu, which I appreciate. It’s not the most authentic Mexican spot. But it’s comfortable. And it’s fun. I’ll be back for the patio.
