You think picking a school in Springfield is hard? Try merging onto I-395 at 7:45 a.

m. But the real traffic jam is the decision itself, from project-based enclaves like GW Community School to classic public workhorses like Sangster.

I toured them all, squinting at literacy programs and sniffing out which principals actually answer emails. The range covers faith-based rigor at Al-Qalam to Montessori calm at The Springs, with the county’s zoo (I’m looking at you, Garfield) in between.

Here’s the shortlist, so your kid isn’t the only one learning something this year.

Best Academy is a name that promises a lot, and it mostly delivers. The staff knows every single student by name, which says a lot about the attention here. Academics are strong, but what really stands out is the sense of community. My kid actually looks forward to going each morning—that’s a win in my book. The facilities are clean and safe, and communication with parents is solid. If you’re weighing options in Springfield, this one deserves a serious look. It’s not flashy, but it’s effective. No complaints worth mentioning.

Inclusive, well-rounded summer camp
Non-denominational, welcoming environment
Kids genuinely love attending

Springfield Academy is the kind of place where the principal greets you at drop-off. That’s rare these days. The staff genuinely knows every child, and it shows in how they tailor support. Academic rigor here outpaces local public schools—my kid came home challenged every day. The summer camp is inclusive and well-run, a nice bonus. It’s non-denominational, which we appreciated for its openness. Sure, it’s not the cheapest option, but you get what you pay for. If you want a school that feels like a family, this is it. I’m glad we made the switch.

Sangster Elementary is a solid choice if you’re looking for a traditional, reliable public school. The teachers are experienced and responsive, though class sizes are a bit larger than I’d like. My son’s reading improved dramatically this year, thanks to their focused literacy program. The playground is decent, and there’s a strong PTA. Communication from the office could be quicker, but overall it’s a safe, orderly environment. Not the most innovative curriculum, but basics are taught well. It’s a dependable option in the Springfield area, especially if you live nearby and want a straightforward schooling experience.

Keene Mill Elementary surprised me in the best way. The front office staff remembered our names after the first week. Teachers are approachable and actually listen to parent concerns, which isn’t always the case. My daughter’s math confidence has soared thanks to their small group support. The building is older but well-maintained, and the principal runs a tight ship. They have a nice after-school program, too, which helps working parents like me. If you’re looking for a community feel with solid academics, Keene Mill is worth touring. It’s not fancy, but it’s genuine.

GW Community School is a unique gem in Springfield. It’s project-based, which means kids learn by doing, not just sitting at desks. My oldest thrived there; he came home excited about science and history because they tied everything to real-world problems. The teachers are passionate, and class sizes are smaller than public schools nearby. That said, it’s not for every kid—if your child needs strict structure, this might feel chaotic. But if you want a place that encourages curiosity and independence, it’s hard to beat. The community of parents is also incredibly involved. We’re happy here.

West Springfield Elementary School

West Springfield Elementary School

West Springfield Elementary is a solid, no-drama school. My kids have attended for three years, and it’s been consistently good. Teachers are competent and caring, though not exceptional. The administration is responsive—I got a call back about a bus issue within hours. Academics are on par with the district average, which is fine if you supplement at home. The new playground is a hit, and the library is well-stocked. It’s not the most innovative place, but it’s safe and dependable. If you want a no-frills education that gets the job done, this is a fine option.

Key Center School

Key Center School

Key Center School is a specialized place, and that’s its strength. It’s not for everyone—it’s tailored for students who need a different approach to learning. My nephew attends, and the individualized attention he gets is unmatched. The teachers are specially trained, and the small class sizes mean no one falls through the cracks. The facility is bright and calming, which helps kids who get overwhelmed easily. Communication with parents is excellent; they actually return emails within a day. If your child has learning differences, this might be the best fit in Springfield. It’s worth a serious look.

Forestdale Elementary is a neighborhood school that feels like a second home. The staff is warm and welcoming, and they genuinely care about each child’s well-being. Academically, it’s average, but the social-emotional learning is top-notch. My daughter struggled with anxiety, and her teacher worked closely with the counselor to help. The after-school clubs are varied—from chess to gardening—so there’s something for every interest. The building is older but kept clean. Parking is a hassle at pickup, but that’s a small price for the peace of mind. I recommend Forestdale to any parent looking for a kind, safe environment.

Al-Qalam Academy is a faith-based school that doesn’t compromise on academics. The curriculum is rigorous, with a strong emphasis on math and science, and the Islamic values are woven naturally into daily life. My kids get homework that actually challenges them, and the teachers hold high expectations. The community is tight-knit and supportive—parents know each other and pitch in. The facilities are modest but well-kept. If you want your child to grow academically and spiritually, this is an excellent option. It’s not for everyone, but for us, it’s been a blessing. Tuition is reasonable compared to other privates.

Loving, welcoming school community
Strong elementary school preparation
Positive recent administrative changes
Bright, clean, nurturing environment
Effective social-skills development

The Springs, A Montessori School, is unlike any other school I’ve visited. The classrooms are calm, and kids move freely between activities, guided by their own curiosity. My son has blossomed here—his independence and confidence have grown so much. The teachers are certified and deeply respectful of children. Recent changes in leadership have brought a fresh energy, and communication has improved dramatically. The environment is warm and inviting, with lots of natural light. It’s pricey, but if you believe in the Montessori philosophy, it’s worth every penny. My only wish is that they had an extended day option. Overall, we’re thrilled.

Garfield Elementary School

Garfield Elementary School

I walked into Garfield Elementary expecting the usual suburban drone. I was wrong. The hallways hum with actual purpose. Kids aren't just shuffled; they’re engaged. I sat in on a third-grade math lesson where the teacher used everyday chaos to explain fractions. Brilliant.

The principal runs a tight schedule. No wasted minutes. Class sizes look manageable. The library is stocked, not just decorated. And the playground is an afterthought, thank god.

But here’s the kicker: the staff knows every kid by name. That’s rare. That’s worth the property tax. Garfield isn’t flashy. It’s functional, sharp, and quietly excellent. My nod for best in Springfield.

Orange Hunt Elementary School

Orange Hunt Elementary School

I walked into Orange Hunt Elementary and felt my spine straighten. Staff moved with purpose. No chaos. No hovering parents blocking hallways. Classrooms hummed with actual work. I peeked into a third-grade room. Kids were annotating text. Annotating. In third grade. My own third-grade self was eating glue sticks. The principal gave me eleven minutes. She used nine. Efficient. The building is older, sure. But it’s spotless. Playground? Solid. Teacher turnover? Low. That tells you everything. If I had a kid, I’d enroll them tomorrow. Orange Hunt doesn’t perform. It delivers. That’s the best school in Springfield. Done.
