Fairfax is a county of strip malls and surprises, and the beer here proves it. You can chase a smoked pork belly at Ono, lose an hour to pinball at Ocelot, or watch a river do absolutely nothing at Lake Anne.

This list runs from a farm where staff pets your pooch to a warehouse where kids eat butter noodles while you sip a Czech polotmavý. I once poured my own flight with the confidence of a man who has never been wrong, so trust me.

Consider this your designated driver through the hops.

Highlights
Three distinct seating zones
Top-shelf crispy wings
Event hosting done right
Stellar own-brewed beers
Endless outdoor seating

I walked into Lark Brewing Co. and immediately understood its game. Three distinct seating zones, each one a different excuse to stay. The top-shelf crispy wings arrived with a snap that echoed in my skull, a warning shot to every other wing in Fairfax. Their own-brewed beers are stellar, honestly, the kind of ales that make you forget you came for the food, or the endless outdoor seating that practically begs for a slow, pointless afternoon. I sat, I drank, I watched an event host herd a crowd with the ease of a sheepdog who'd been doing it since birth. I left feeling both full and suspicious of my own contentment.

Massive beer and cocktail selection
Spacious indoor and outdoor seating
Sunday brunch and frequent events
Generous eight-glass flight options
Clever, cheeky beer nomenclature

Commonwealth Brewing Co FFX is a place where choice becomes a moral problem. Massive beer and cocktail selection means you will spend twenty minutes staring at a menu like a possum in headlights. I settled on an eight-glass flight, which is generous, almost obscenely so, and the naming scheme is clever, cheeky, the kind of wordplay that makes you feel smarter than you are. The indoor and outdoor seating is spacious, so you can avoid everyone or find a corner to be alone with your decisions. Sunday brunch and frequent events add a social layer I did not need but happily tolerated. The beer was fine. The flight was a journey. My liver filed a complaint.

Highlights
Self-serve tap novelty
Smoked pork belly standout
Custom flight freedom
Grandma-level macaroni salad
Cheddar biscuit worth it

Ono Brewing Company has a self-serve tap novelty that turns every patron into a wildly irresponsible bartender. I loved it. You get custom flight freedom, which means I poured myself a sequence of beers with the confidence of a man who has never been wrong. The smoked pork belly is a standout, smoky, fatty, a little bit mean. The macaroni salad tastes like someone's grandmother decided to fight your grandmother, and the grandmother won. The cheddar biscuit is worth every crumb. I sat there, alone, pouring my own beer, eating grandma's food, and I realized this is what freedom actually looks like. It is a little damp and it smells like hops.

Highlights
Friendly service, easy parking
Trail-adjacent, bike-friendly patio
Solid beer, great sweet potato fries
Relaxed, community-driven atmosphere
Food exceeds typical brewery fare

Caboose Brewing Company & Tavern is the kind of place you stumble into and then never really leave. Friendly service, easy parking, which is more than I can say for most of my relationships. The patio is trail-adjacent and bike-friendly, so you can pretend you exercised before drinking a solid, dependable beer. The sweet potato fries are genuinely great, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, the kind of fry that makes you rethink your loyalties. The food exceeds typical brewery fare, which is a low bar, sure, but they clear it with a limbo dancer's grace. The atmosphere is relaxed, community-driven, and I felt like a regular even though I had never been there. I almost ordered a second beer. I did.

Waterfront deck beside quiet river
Ten taps, all brewed in-store
Simple styles executed flawlessly
Warm pretzels from Nordic Knot
Cozy patio with fire and heater

Lake Anne Brew House sits on a waterfront deck beside a quiet river that seems to have signed a peace treaty with the world. Ten taps, all brewed in-store, which is a commitment I respect. Their simple styles are executed flawlessly, like a haiku about a lager. The warm pretzels come from Nordic Knot, and they arrived so soft and salty that I briefly considered proposing to one. The patio has a fire and a heater, so the cold could not touch me, not emotionally, not physically. I watched the water do absolutely nothing for an hour. It was the best hour of my week. I finished my beer, ordered another, and let the river lie to me.

Highlights
Packed Saturday afternoon energy
Gravel courtyard with live stage
Pizza truck and merchandise tents
Yoga with puppies and drinks
Family-friendly outdoor playground vibe

Eavesdrop Brewery on a Saturday afternoon is a controlled riot with a soundtrack. Packed energy, the kind that makes you grateful you are not the one pouring. The gravel courtyard has a live stage, which hosted a band that may or may not have been any good, but the volume made them sound important. Pizza truck and merchandise tents, so you can eat and buy things and pretend you are at a festival but without the porta-potties. There is yoga with puppies and drinks, which is a sentence I never thought I would write, and it is exactly as absurd as it sounds. Family-friendly outdoor playground vibe, so the kids run wild while the adults stand around holding beers and looking tired. I loved it. I hated it. I'll be back.

Highlights
Spacious lawn for families
Balanced beer selection beyond IPAs
Affordable, tasty food options
Live music inside and out
Hard to leave your seat

Lost Barrel Brewing has a spacious lawn that invites families to spread out like a picnic of collective anxiety. I found a seat, and I did not want to leave, which is the highest compliment I can offer a brewery. The beer selection is balanced, mercifully, with options beyond the usual IPA assault, including something dark and patient. The food is affordable and tasty, which is almost a paradox in this county. Live music inside and out, so you can move away from the noise and still hear it. I sat for three hours. My legs forgot how to stand. The beer was good. The lawn was better. The combo is dangerous.

Best bitter, Czech polotmavý
Guitar-pick logo, giant stickers
Pinball arcade, vast indoor space
Witching Hour Märzen, Helles Awaits
Professional service, festive weekend vibe

Ocelot Brewing Company has a best bitter that made me want to apologize to every British person I have ever mocked. The Czech polotmavý is a revelation, amber and gentle, the kind of beer that whispers secrets in a language I do not know. The guitar-pick logo and giant stickers are a nice touch, and the pinball arcade is a vast indoor space that turns adults into children with bad posture. I played pinball, I lost, I didn't care. The Witching Hour Märzen and Helles Awaits are both excellent, proof that lagers are not a punishment. Professional service, festive weekend vibe, and I left with a sticker I will never put on anything. It's too precious.

Stunning panoramic countryside views
Excellent, approachable beer lineup
Spacious, uncrowded relaxed atmosphere
Easy repeat-visit destination

Dirt Farm Brewing is the kind of place you drive to on purpose, which is saying something because I hate driving. The panoramic countryside views are stunning, rolling hills that seem to have been designed by someone who wanted to sell real estate. The beer lineup is approachable and excellent, not a single miss, which is rare enough to be suspicious. The atmosphere is spacious, uncrowded, relaxed, the opposite of every other Saturday I have had this year. I sat on a bench and stared at a hill for a very long time. A cow looked at me. I looked at the cow. We understood each other. This is the easy repeat-visit destination, the one you tell nobody about because you want it to stay empty.

Highlights
Rotating beers, friendly pups
Local art, food trucks
Stellar outdoor gathering space
Perfect for post-ceremony celebrations

Adventure Brewing Company is exactly what its name promises, which terrified me at first. Rotating beers, friendly pups wandering between tables, local art on the walls that makes you feel like you are in someone's living room, if that living room had a bar and a food truck. The outdoor gathering space is stellar, the kind of place where you could hold a wedding or a funeral and no one would know the difference. The food trucks rotate too, so you never know what you are going to get, which is the adventure part. I went on a Tuesday and ate a burrito that changed my week. The dogs approved. I approved. The ceremony of it all felt right.

Fancy Nana Stout slaps
Staff pets your pooch
Off the beaten path
Owner from Forgeworks roots
Dark lager Octoberfest joy

Barking Rose Brewing Company + Farm is off the beaten path, and I mean that in the way that my GPS gave up three miles before I arrived. The Fancy Nana Stout slaps, and I do not use that word lightly. It's sweet, roasty, and somehow nostalgic, like a memory of a grandmother I never had. The staff pet my pooch, which is a requirement for any brewery in my book, and they did it with genuine enthusiasm. The owner comes from Forgeworks roots, so there is a pedigree of craft that shows. The dark lager Octoberfest is pure joy, malty and smooth, the kind of beer that makes you want to buy a dirndl. I left with a dog-hair-covered sweater and a full heart.

Highlights
IPAs, fries, quick service
Huge tap list, cans, swag
Arcade games and board games
Kids' menu with butter noodles
Coffee menu alongside beer

Aslin Beer Company in Herndon is a machine, and I mean that as a compliment. IPAs, fries, quick service, all the things you want when you are hungry and indecisive. The tap list is huge, plus cans and swag, so you can take the experience home and ruin your own couch. Arcade games and board games fill the space, so you can lose at Pac-Man while losing at life. There is a kids' menu with butter noodles, which is a genius move because children are basically tiny creatures with noodle-based needs. The coffee menu alongside beer is a dangerous mix, so I had a beer and a cold brew and I did not sleep for two days. Worth it. Completely worth it.
